Meeting and Events Outlook Improves for 2010

The business of meetings and events was dealt a heavy blow in 2009.  Between the economy and what has been called the “AIG Effect,” the number of functions and attendees went down.  The good news is that industry pundits are predicting that things will improve in 2010.

For those trying to save money and/or avoid the unnecessary scrutiny of the press, the Venues of NTC Promenade can provide a welcome respite.  We have recession-friendly pricing, offer value for your money and are conveniently located.

The recession triggered a domino effect of belt tightening.  Less income in both households and organizations meant less discretionary funds for meetings and events – hosting or attending.  But as indicators of recovery accumulate, spending is loosening.  Bookings will continue, however, to be short-term until we officially come out of the recession with the exception of the social market.  Most brides continue to take up to a year or more to plan their special day.

The “AIG Effect” is also blamed for many meetings and events being cancelled or postponed.  After the high-profile “boondoggles” of some of the major offenders became public, the press focused attention on alleged abuses as the rule rather than as the exception they really were.  But the perceived negative image caused many corporations to cancel functions rather than being put in a position to defend them.

Writer and economist Ben Stein recently made a poignant observation in the American Spectator:  “Business meetings had zero to do with causing this recession.  Even more to the point, banning or condemning business meetings will not help us get out of the recession.“

For more information on how to book your next meeting or event, be it large or small, indoors or out, contact a member of our Sales Team at (619) 573-9260 or visit us at www.NTCPromenade.com.

A New Star at the Liberty School

Robert was a student from the Juvenile Court Community Schools who attended the NTC Foundation’s Liberty School program for one year. When he first came to us, he was a very energetic young man, who could definitely be described as the class clown. Always ready with a humorous quip, Robert was the center of attention.

The students were studying “Hip Hop” at the Jean Isaacs San Diego Dance Theater and were given the unique opportunity to participate in a Spring Dance performance. Many students agreed to participate, including Robert. They all practiced and practiced, and on the evening of the event, they arrived with friends in tow and performed their dances beautifully.

Robert was smiling and talking to guests after the show, answering questions about his dancing experience and graciously receiving congratulations. The students were like “rock stars” with their classmates, and Robert definitely acted differently the rest of the semester. This experience changed his identity of himself. While he still had a certain bent toward humor, his demeanor was more appropriate and positive than before his dance experience. He was more engaged in every class he attended at The Liberty School program. He realized that he was valued, respected and admired by the community. “The Liberty School was a great experience,” said Robert. “Even though we got to leave the regular school, that isn’t the only reason why it was great. It was very educational and I got to participate in things I wouldn’t have been able to before.”

Robert is no longer attending the Juvenile Court Community Schools. He has returned to his San Diego Unified School District high school. He sees himself as a self confident student who has tasted success. Robert is definitely a STAR and through his Juvenile Court Community School and the Liberty School program, he has learned to shine in all the right places!

Please consider making a donation to support The Liberty School Program, so we can continue to offer hands-on, innovative experiences to more students like Robert. Donate now.

The Liberty School Program offers public school students, an innovative learning experience that enriches standards-based curriculum with project-based learning strategies using the rich and diverse resources of arts, culture and science organizations in residence at NTC Promenade. These classes are led by NTC resident artists and offer students an opportunity to experience learning through hands-on activities.

What’s the Difference Between NTC Promenade and Liberty Station?

One of the questions we hear most often at the NTC Foundation is ‘What is the difference between NTC Promenade and Liberty Station?’

NTC Promenade is the 28 acres and 26 historic buildings within the former Naval Training Center now being transformed into a civic, arts and cultural campus for the San Diego region. It is a $100 million redevelopment investment that is of the size and scale unlike any other cultural project in San Diego. This unique property, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is owned by the City of San Diego. The NTC Foundation was established in FY 2000 to raise the $100 million to renovate the buildings and operate a new cultural district for decades to come. To date we have raised $41 million and completed one-third of the total square footage available, with 36 resident groups and artists on site. More information is at www.ntcpromenade.org

Liberty Station is the entire 361-acre parcel at the former Naval Training Center that is being jointly developed by the City of San Diego Redevelopment Agency and The Corky McMillin Companies. It includes the 28-acre NTC Promenade Arts & Cultural District, as well as 125 acres of parks, open space and a boat channel; shopping villages and restaurants; the nine-hole Sail Ho Golf Club; two hotels; and six schools. Nearly 350 families now reside at Liberty Station and dozens of companies, with hundreds of employees, are doing business there. Liberty Station continues to receive accolades throughout the country for outstanding architectural and redevelopment design, as well as being a model military base conversion.
