Newly Renovated Barracks 19 Ready for First Artists in Residence;
Retail and Studio Space Still Available
The first of what will eventually be dozens of artists and designers in residence at NTC Promenade will soon be moving into the newly renovated Art & Design studios in historic Barracks 19 at NTC Promenade. Chi Chocolat/Banyan Catering, Core Design Studio, Kenneth Greene Photography & Design, Patrick Meehan Fine Art and Pantaleoni Photography will move into their studios starting June 1.
The NTC Foundation recently completed a $2.5 million renovation to Barracks 19, thanks to a grant from the City of San Diego’s Redevelopment Agency and the California Heritage Fund Grant Program. It will be the first of several Navy barracks buildings, built in 1923, that will have a new mission as art and design studios for artists and designers seeking space to create, exhibit, promote and sell their work. Barracks 19 joins 6 other buildings at NTC Promenade that have been recently renovated in what so far has been a $38 million project by the NTC Foundation.

Chi Chocolat/Banyan Catering
Combining a successful catering kitchen and an artisan chocolate retail business, Banyan Catering provides an elegant yet simple and freshly prepared menu. The same ethos goes for Chi Chocolat: simple, elegant and creative - no additives or preservatives and they only use fresh cream, herbs and spices to create artisan chocolates.
Tomas Ryan of Core Design Studio believes there is art in process, in addition to the finished product. Core Design Studio will focus primarily on expanding the idea of furniture as art through the work of Tom’s unique designs and fabrication.
Kenneth Greene Photography and Design is a multi-media studio including photography, fine art, fabric art and community classes in the arts, provided by Kenneth Greene and Rachel Grant.
Patrick Meehan Fine Art offers landscape paintings, plein-air paintings, figurative paintings and portraits and charcoal drawings, with the goal of offering classes in the future.
Photographer Chris Pantaleoni works with photo paper, canvas and aluminum as his Artistic Medium to record and show true images of nature, architecture and people both real and abstract.

Two Dance Photographers to Exhibit in Weiss Gallery at Dance Place as Part of Binational Dance Showcase
Jean Isaacs San Diego Dance Theater and Minerva Tapia Dance Group and George Willis are pleased to present two photographers of dance - Jennifer Spencer and Julio Rodriguez Ramos – starting May 22 at the Mandell Weiss Gallery in Dance Place San Diego at NTC Promenade. The exhibit - on display through September 6 - is presented in coordination with the XII Muestra Choregrafica Binacional - XII Binational Choreographic Showcase, scheduled for May 22-25 at Dance Place.
The binational event, focusing on enhancing the relationships in cross-border art activities, has coordinated the two visual artist photographers in an art exhibition designed to engage dancers, choreographers and their audiences. This is an opportunity for artists of dance and photography to meet, study each other’s work and initiate future collaborations.

About the artists:
Julio Rodriguez Ramos (Tijuana) is a visual artist and a self-taught photographer. His images of the nature and scenery of Baja California have earned countless awards and honors and publication by both national and international presses. Julio’s work has appeared in numerous exhibitions, including installations at the Research Center of the UABC Cultural Museum in Mexicali, the Mexican Consulate in San Diego, the Mingei Museum and the Museum of Natural History. Born in the city of Obregon, Sonora, México in 1956, Julio has lived in Tijuana for the past 25 years. His commitment to the arts spans his multi-faceted career that includes producing many large-scale cultural art events. Julio is the founder and Director of the Entijuanarte Art Festival, a celebration of art with representations from the most outstanding artists around the world and México.
Jennifer Spencer (San Diego) is a painter/photographer who has been photographing artists of San Diego for the past three years, both visual and performing. Her most recent suite of images is of the Jean Isaacs San Diego Dance Theater dancers in rehearsal for “Cabaret”, performed in January 2009. Originally a painter for many years, Ms Spencer has turned to photography as her new tool for expression in her exhibition, “Dancing to Abstraction.”
NTC Summer Arts Academy
NTC Promenade is delighted to present an exceptional experience for children featuring professional artists in dance, art, music, theatre, martial arts, and health and fitness. These fine artists, all resident professionals at NTC Promenade, will be offering their services during the weeks of August 3 and August 10 exclusively for the NTC Summer Arts Academy.
Several options will be available including half day and whole day programs. The scheduling will allow your child the opportunity to sample various artistic programs to awaken or strengthen their talents and interests. Actors Alliance of San Diego, ARTS (A Reason to Survive), Capoeira Brasil, Expressive Arts Institute, Jean Isaacs Dance Theatre, Malashock Dance, PAARTS (Performing Arts & Athletic Restorative Training Specialists), Recreational Music Center, San Diego Ballet, U.S. Karate Academy, and Visions Art Quilt Gallery will be participating.

“Return with Honor” – USS Stockdale Commissioned; Stockdale Tribute at NTC Command Center Open to the Public
On April 18, the Navy League of Santa Barbara hosted the commissioning of the USS Stockdale, (DDG 106), an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer named in honor of American hero, VADM James B. Stockdale. Thanks to donor support, the NTC Foundation in 2007 dedicated a professionally curated tribute exhibit telling the story of VADM Stockdale and his wife Sybil and their heroism during the Vietnam War. It is located at the NTC Command Center, and is free and open to the public.
James Stockdale, Commanding Officer, VF51 and Carrier Air Group Commander (CAG-16), was shot down on September 9, 1965, and became the highest ranking officer held in captivity during the Vietnam conflict. He was held captive in Hoa Lo Prison or “Hanoi Hilton” from September 9, 1965 until his release on February 12, 1973, enduring seven and a half years of brutal imprisonment. Many years were spent in solitary confinement and most in leg irons. Interrogations and torture sessions from his North Vietnamese captors were routine. Despite this treatment, Stockdale was able to unite fellow prisoners of war by establishing a code of conduct and modifying a system of communication through tapping and finger signals.
Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale was one of the most highly decorated officers in the history of the Navy, with 26 personal combat decorations, including two Distinguished Flying Crosses, three Distinguished Service Medals, two Purple Hearts and four Silver Star medals, in addition to the Medal of Honor. He was the only three-star admiral in the history of the Navy to wear both the Medal of Honor and Aviator Wings.
“Naming the ship after someone is one of the most profound honors that can be bestowed on any American citizen,” said CMDR Fred W. Kacher, USN, Commanding Officer, USS Stockdale. “It is a fitting tribute to VADM James B. Stockdale’s career and especially his leadership. The ship’s motto – ‘Return With Honor’ – is something every sailor hopes for when we head over the horizon to serve our country. It is a slogan we think fits the admiral’s legacy and our crew very well.”
The USS Stockdale is the 56th in the Arleigh Burke class, and the Stockdale the 30th built by Bath Iron Works. It measures 509.5 feet in length, 66.5 feet abeam, and weighs 9,200 tons. These ships are multi-mission vessels. They are guided missile destroyers, but can play a significant role in anti-air warfare, air defense for broader formations, and strike groups; with sonar and torpedoes, it also is a formidable anti-submarine warfare asset, especially with the helicopters, which carry their own torpedoes.
After six to nine months of testing, the ship and crew will be assigned to a strike or amphibious readiness group and head out to sea. It will be home ported in San Diego.

In 2007, the NTC Foundation dedicated the north wing of the NTC Command Center for the Stockdale Family Tribute. The Stockdale Tribute includes: The VADM James B. Stockdale Boardroom; The Sybil Stockdale Rose Garden in Honor of Navy Families; and the Stockdale Family Exhibit, which captures the story of an ordinary San Diego family in extraordinary circumstances during the Vietnam War. This exhibit honors our military heritage and teaches today’s students about civics, heroism and American history. It is located at 2640 Historic Decatur Road at NTC Promenade.

NTC Promenade to be Featured on Huell Howser’s California’s Communities in May
NTC Promenade and Liberty Station are featured as exemplary redevelopment projects in the current episode of the PBS series California’s Communities hosted by Huell Howser. The program will air in San Diego on KPBS on Saturday, May 16 @ 5:30pm and Thursday, May 21 @ 7pm.
Featured in the segment is both the historic and colorful past of Naval Training Center San Diego, but also the bright future of NTC in its new mission as the Liberty Station mixed use development and NTC Promenade arts and culture district.
California’s Communities takes viewers throughout the state in search of the positive stories connected with cities and towns and with the people who live there. In this series, popular PBS host Huell Howser discovers what local officials and citizens are doing to make their communities even more vibrant places to live and work. The series is sponsored by the California Redevelopment Association.
NTC Foundation Seeks Donated Office Furniture
NTC Foundation is in need of six office desks/chairs and some file cabinets so that we can establish a Venue Sales and Leasing office at the NTC Command Center on Historic Decatur Road. This will provide our staff better access to the general public that visits NTC Promenade and Liberty Station. Most of the office furniture we now use in Quarters A was scavenged from the empty NTC buildings after the Navy left! Funds for new furniture are not in our budget. If any of our readers work for a company that may be re-modeling or downsizing their office and has furniture in good condition they can donate to us, we would be grateful. The New Americans Museum will present two simultaneous exhibitions that continue their commitment to celebrate and explore the contributions of America’s diverse immigration experiences. May 16th-17th – Jean Isaacs 35th Anniversary Retrospective Concert
In 1974, San Diego was a very different place than today. Pete Wilson was Mayor, the population was a mere 700,000, there was no Gaslamp District, no trolley and the Padres and Chargers played in place called Jack Murphy Stadium. It was in this climate that Jean Isaacs began producing professional dance for the region and she has continued non-stop for thirty five years. In honor of this artistic milestone, San Diego Dance Theater will present the Jean Isaacs 35th Anniversary Retrospective Concert at San Diego State.
