ON POINT - October 2008

Behind the Scenes at NTC Promenade” Civic Community Forum – October 14th, 5:00pm – 6:00pm at the San Diego Watercolor Society (2825 Dewey Road).

A New Mission for the Officer’s Quarter’s Gardens at NTC

The NTC Foundation is asking for your immediate support to help raise the remaining $40,000 needed to match a $100,000 grant from the California Cultural and Historical Endowment, by December 1. These funds will allow us to complete a Master Plan for the restoration of the historic gardens, and create a horticultural showcase for San Diego.

Each day, thousands of people drive by the four, yellow homes on Rosecrans Street, at the former Naval Training Center. Many do not realize that surrounding these former NTC Officers’ Quarters is a San Diego treasure – four acres of formal gardens – awaiting restoration to become a stunning new public garden for community visitors.

The gardens represent much of the romance and history of California horticulture. To preserve this community gem, the NTC Foundation is asking for your immediate support to help us with the final $40,000 needed to match a $100,000 grant from the California Cultural and Historical Endowment, by December 1. These funds will allow us to complete a Master Plan for the restoration of the historic gardens, which is now underway by renowned San Diego landscape architect firm of Spurlock Poirier.

For more than 75 years, the NTC Officers’ Quarters and Gardens were home to Navy leadership and their families. The four acres of beautifully landscaped gardens overlooking San Diego Bay provided a magnificent setting to welcome dignitaries from around the world. The homes and gardens together offered a unique sense of place both within Naval Training Center and the city.

The homes and gardens are in the 26-building historic core of the former NTC that now constitute NTC Promenade, a new center that will enrich our community for generations to come with innovative experiences in arts, science, culture and technology. Like the other NTC Promenade buildings, the Officer’s Quarters & Gardens are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The gardens have the potential to be a signature horticultural showcase for San Diego that incorporates the site’s rich history, maximizes its botanical potential and integrates the arts and nature. Once renovated, the gardens will be open to the public for the first time in history.

I now invite you to join us by making a tax-deductible contribution to the NTC Foundation to help restore this San Diego treasure for future generations to enjoy. (Donate Now.)

Local Author Recalls History of the Naval Training Center

Vintage photos reveal contributions of those who trained and worked at the NTC in new local book by Jennifer A. Garey, San Diego’s Naval Training Center. Get your copy today!

After training hundreds of thousands of recruits, San Diego’s Naval Training Center was officially closed on April 30, 1997, and has since been transformed into San Diego’s new and vibrant cultural center, Liberty Station. New from Arcadia Publishing is San Diego’s Naval Training Center, the pictorial history book chronicling the contributions of the NTC to the local area.

Local author Jennifer A. Garey has compiled this pictorial history of the recruits, schools, and community, which grew and trained together in what was once the highlight of the U.S. Navy, the San Diego Naval Training Center. Using more than 200 vintage images, San Diego’s Naval Training Center features over 70 years of photographs, many of which have never before been published.

Author Jennifer A. Garey hopes San Diego’s Naval Training Center “will offer past recruits, officers and personnel of NTC San Diego some memories and some closure of what was most likely the most significant time in their lives.”

Highlights of San Diego’s Naval Training Center include the 550 acres and 300 buildings that eventually comprised the NTC; landscaped promenades and the NTC parade grounds; and the wood frame training “non-ship,” the USS Recruit (a.k.a. USS Neversail), where recruits learned their first duties of seamanship.
