ON POINT - December 2011

From Our Walls to Yours – Give Art for the Holidays: Friday Night Liberty on December 2nd

Take a break from the malls and enjoy our December Friday Night Liberty open studios and galleries on Friday, December 2 starting at 5pm. In addition to finding a great array of gift opportunities, we invite you to enjoy holiday music by the Pacific Sound Brass Quintet in the arcade at Barracks 19 starting at 6pm. Food, festivities, music and fun at Friday Night Liberty. For a full list of exhibits and gifts, go to Friday Night Liberty Schedule.

Holiday Romance Is In the Air

Like “White Christmas,” “happy holidays” and “guaranteed delivery before December 25,” the phrase, “Will you marry me?” is very popular this time of year. More engagements occur during the holidays than any other time of the year.

Why does the holiday season prompt even more engagements than Valentine’s Day? Perhaps it’s because you gather with your family (or future in-laws), you feel that much closer to the person you’re dating, and it presents the perfect opportunity and audience to pop the question.

NTC Venues offer just the right ambiance for that bended knee moment. We also have wonderful locations for a ceremony, rehearsal dinner and reception.

Imagine an idyllic garden wedding in the lushly landscaped Luce Court. For the more traditional, the charm of the historic North Chapel offers a wonderful option. Rehearsal dinners and small receptions fit perfectly into the fully restored NTC Command Center. And what wedding party wouldn’t relish the historic grandeur of the McMillin Companies Event Center that can hold up to 400?

Remember, social events aren’t limited to brides and grooms. There are vows to be renewed, anniversaries to be celebrated, birthdays to commemorate, bar and bat mitzvahs, baptisms and confirmations, and many more.

NTC Venues are surrounded by green, bordered by water and centered on history. With plenty of free parking and atmosphere, they are the perfect place for your next celebration.

We've Made a Change to Our Name

NTC at Liberty Station logoGood-bye “Promenade.” Hello “Liberty Station.” Stay the course with “NTC.” That’s the recommendation of our board, staff and key stakeholders regarding modifying the “NTC Promenade” name to “NTC at Liberty Station.” We want to make it easier for our Resident Groups and Events to leverage the marketing tie-in with and the community awareness of Liberty Station, while continuing to build a separate identity for NTC as the Arts & Culture District within Liberty Station. As the community’s awareness of NTC as a military base diminishes over time, we want to change people’s perception of NTC to the place “Where San Diego Gets Creative.” Much like Fort Mason in San Francisco and The Torpedo Factory in Alexandria that are now arts centers, over time, NTC will also mean innovation and creativity. Look for our new logo and our new name to start phasing in going forward.

giveBig - Better Giving Match Day!

We are pleased to announce that donations made to the NTC Foundation between Dec. 14 and Dec. 15 will be matched by the San Diego Foundation at www.giveBIGsandiego.org. The San Diego Foundation is hosting their first-ever giveBIG San Diego match day initiative. During a 36-hour period, the public will have an opportunity to make online donations (starting at $25) and The San Diego Foundation will match organization donation totals in a pro-rated amount (expectation of 15-30 cents on the dollar). Each gift is 100% tax-deductible. Click here for more information or to make your donation to NTC Foundation between Dec. 14th and Dec. 15th. We are excited about this event, and thank you in advance for your participation!

NTC's Liberty School Uses the Arts to Help Students Succeed

When you visit NTC at Liberty Station you may encounter groups of young students attending Liberty School. Now in its 5th year, the Liberty School offers at-risk elementary and junior high students opportunities to see and make art with professional artists. Working in partnership with our NTC Resident Groups, students are able to explore artistic venues of visual art, dance, music, and theater that they might not have realized exist. It can become a life changing experience when the students succeed.

For so many of our students, the Liberty School program serves as a stepping stone into a world they never knew existed because of the poverty in which they live. Now, they see that there are choices for them beyond dealing drugs, gangs, welfare or teen-age pregnancy. There is a ‘way out’ for the child who is not destined to be a sports hero. They learn that they have something to offer-they have a gift, a talent, a joy they can share.”
–Wendy Kellogg, ALBA Education Specialist

Liberty School relies on philanthropic dollars to operate, and we want to thank our donors for their support of this program.

Thank you to our Liberty School Donors for making this program possible!
