Luce Auditorium Community Forum to Showcase Proposed Designs
The La Jolla Light recently asked John Malashock “If you could snap your fingers and have it done, what might you add, subtract or improve in the area?” John’s response, “Luce Auditorium! Malashock Dance is now located at Liberty Station in Dance Place San Diego, a facility I helped conceive. Right next door to the dance building is an auditorium with beautiful designs to be renovated into three performance spaces for dance and film. It would become our home theater, house numerous film festivals, and bring Liberty Station to life as a true destination for the arts.” The public is invited to a Community Forum to meet NTC Promenade architect Chris Bittner and see proposed designs for transforming Luce into a new Performing Arts and Cinema Center on Tuesday, February 15 at 6 p.m. in the NTC Command Center, 2640 Historic Decatur Rd. For the entire article on Malashock Dance, link to La Jolla Light.
Land Use Society to Honor NTCF CEO Pam Hamilton Lester
The San Diego Chapter of Lambda Alpha International (LAI) will present its prestigious Crystal Globe Award to Pam Hamilton Lester, NTC Foundation President & CEO, at its Annual Dinner in February. The award is being presented in recognition of her achievements in the successful renaissance of downtown San Diego’s commercial and residential neighborhoods, and her dedication to transforming the former Naval Training Center’s historic core into a home for arts, culture and nonprofit organizations.
Hamilton Lester’s background in land use began at the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in Washington, DC and Los Angeles. Locally she was Director of Housing and Redevelopment for the City of La Mesa and joined the City of San Diego’s Centre City Development Corporation (CCDC) in 1982, serving as President from 1988 to 1994 and Senior Vice President until 2006. Hamilton Lester has been the President and CEO of the NTC Foundation since October 2007, where she oversees all aspects of the transformation of 27 historic buildings into the civic, arts & culture district called NTC Promenade.
Lambda Alpha International is a global honorary society for the advancement of land economics by facilitating the interaction of members who have distinguished themselves in their professions, their communities and through academic achievements.
Recovery on the Horizon

Hospitality industry experts and pundits are projecting recovery ahead for the San Diego tourism and events industry. After two dismal years, 2010 finally gave San Diego a glimpse of better times ahead. And though not yet out of the woods, 2011 looks like America's finest city will continue this upward trend. The Venues of NTC Promenade were able to hold our own and even fared better than the industry standard and we look forward to continued growth. The following indicators are cited for the optimism:
- Recession-weary travelers as well as locals finally began to open their wallets for more than bare necessities;
- Following suit, corporations, associations and non-profits began to schedule the meetings and events they have delayed for so long;
- Comic-Con decided to stay in San Diego AND Best of San Diego decided to stay at NTC Promenade;
- Gaps in the calendar of the convention center AND the Venues of NTC Promenade are filling in; and
- Hotel revenue is rising as is the revenue generated by the Venues of NTC Promenade.
San Diego County tourism and hospitality leaders say 2011 will likely play out as the second year of a three-year recovery. But we’re very happy with these words of encouragement after the lean times we’ve been through.
If you are ready to schedule that celebration, fundraiser, performance or conference, we invite you to call the Venues of NTC Promenade at 619-573-9260 or check out the website at www.NTCPromenade.com.
