Making a Difference One “Cow” at a Time

NTC Cow Parade Cow with artist and the Burnhams

Community leaders Roberta and Malin Burnham generously donated a cow in the CowParade La Jolla Exhibit to the NTC Foundation.  The CowParade is the world’s largest public art event, featuring 40 life-size fiberglass cows designed and created by local artists.

The NTC Foundation’s cow will be designed by student, Inocente Izucar Galicia, under the direction of Rob Tobin, Artist in Residence for the Pat D’Arrigo ARTS (A Reason To Survive) Center. ARTS is a resident group at NTC Promenade and is dedicated to healing, inspiring and empowering children facing life challenges by providing innovative arts-based programs, education and opportunities.

Inocente is a strong, talented young lady, who has overcome extraordinary circumstances. She is a 10th grade student, who recently transferred from the Monarch School, a school providing accredited education and basic needs for homeless and at-risk kids, to High Tech High. Through the Monarch School, she was introduced to ARTS, and attended classes for two years. Her talent was prevalent, and last year, she was hired as a youth artist to create art for the ARTS gallery and fundraising events. She also teaches classes to some of the younger students. Inocente is inspired by the name "A Reason To Survive" and hopes she can continue to help kids facing challenges in the future.

The cow is entitled “Emoo A Reason To Survive” and will be part of the CowParade La Jolla Exhibit, displayed on the streets of downtown La Jolla and in University Towne Centre March 15 to June 15. At the conclusion of the exhibition, the cows will be auctioned for charitable beneficiaries such as Rady Children’s Hospital of San Diego and the Zoological Society of San Diego. The NTC Foundation’s cow was purchased outright by Malin and Roberta Burnham, and after the show will be displayed at NTC Promenade, the Arts and Culture District at Liberty Station.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude for Malin and Roberta Burnham’s endless support and leadership to help transform the historic Naval Training Center into a “Flagship for Arts and Culture” that will benefit generations to come. You too can join the Burnham Family in making a difference. Please consider making a donation to further our community’s vision for NTC Promenade. Donate Now.

Technology Shouldn't Kill Your Meeting Budget

NTC Promenade has its heart in history and its spirit in creativity, but that doesn’t mean we’ve forgotten about technology. While many venues offer audio-visual technology at enormous up-charges, we believe that the tools you need to conduct your meetings should be included with the room. Therefore, we offer our technology tools, whether it be Wi-Fi or conference calling, at little or no additional charge.

All of the meeting venues offer free Wi-Fi over our T1 lines. The meeting rooms in the Command Center have flat screen monitors for your presentation as well as free domestic conference calling. The event center offers a 15’ x 20’ screen, a projector that is suspended from the ceiling to eliminate the concern for obstructions, wireless handheld and lavaliere microphones, and a superb sound system – and all this at one flat rate.

Audio visual may not be the sexiest part of your meeting, but in this economy it’s important to know in advance where your money will be spent. The Venues at NTC Promenade offer you the peace of mind of knowing where your dollars are going without any surprises.

Oaths Abound at NTC Promenade

Two very unique events took place at The Venues of NTC Promenade in recent months. A Happy Couple from the Weddign Marathon

One event featured 100 children, ranging in age from 11 months to 17 years, taking their oath of allegiance in a rare citizenship ceremony in the McMillin Event Center. The event was coordinated by the New Americans Museum in partnership with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and triggered many misty eyes.

Friday the 13th was the 2nd Annual “Lucky in Love” bridal marathon at the North Chapel. Thirty couples either took their vows for the first time or renewed their vows with ceremonies occurring every 20 minutes from 9am-7pm. Their adventure began by checking in at the NTC Command Center to prepare for their run down the aisle, and ended in one of three Liberty Station restaurants who hosted receptions throughout the day. KyXy radio station promoted the event and chose the winning couples. The couples varied greatly in their ages, attire and wedding parties but all embraced the spirit of the day. One lucky couple even won a honeymoon getaway to Mexico! Keep an eye out for this event in the future, as it is guaranteed to become bigger and more spectacular each and every year.

When you are planning your next social event, meeting, or outdoor extravaganza, call the experts at NTC Promenade for all your needs.

NTC Foundation’s Liberty School Program Expands to Include Juvenile Court and County Schools

Thanks to the generous support of San Diego National Bank, Price Charities, Macy’s, Union Bank of California, The Ackerman Foundation, and the Boys and Girls Foundation and Community Service Association, the Liberty School Program was able to expand its services during the first semester of this school year to include middle and high school students from the Juvenile Court and Community Schools (JCCS). These students attend one day a week and experience art, music, dance, martial arts, science, and other educational activities in a supportive environment that promotes learning and builds self-esteem.

Some JCCS students are homeless, and many are under court supervision. Many have disengaged intellectually and emotionally; most have engaged in harmful activities, including prostitution and substance abuse. Most have rarely, if ever, experienced academic success.

A JCCS teacher said that one of the students misses school at least two to three days a week.  However, on this group’s first day at Liberty School, he was a star in Capoeira doing everything extremely well in the class. When he entered the ARTS facility and looked around he said, “Wow, how can I come more often to this place?  Can I take lessons? Can I work here?” His teacher is anxious to see if this will influence his everyday school attitude.

In addition to working with students from the JCCS, the Liberty School Program continues to work with all of the third graders from Dewey Elementary School and seventh and eighth grade students from the San Diego Unified School District’s ALBA alternative school program.

Developing and launching the Liberty School program has been a great adventure for the NTC Foundation. It is a program that reflects our core values and our mission, and we are grateful to all of our donors who share our vision.

We invite you to join us in the adventure. It costs approximately $400 per visit for each class or about $15 a day per student. Please consider making a donation to support the Liberty School Program. Donate Now.
