“Inocente” and Arts Education Big Winners on Oscar Night
San Diego cheered loudly on Oscar night when it was announced that “Inocente” had won for Best Documentary Short. Those of us at NTC had seen the once homeless young artist Inocente Izucar blossom at ARTS: A Reason to Survive, where she had her first Gallery show, and where she did much of her art work. But it was also the important role the arts play in children’s lives that also won that night when First Lady Michelle Obama spoke eloquently about arts programs for children.
At the end of the broadcast, the First Lady said, “[The arts] are especially important for young people. Every day they engage in the arts, they learn to open their imaginations and dream just a little bigger and to strive every day to reach those dreams.”
Enriching children’s lives through the arts is something that happens every day at NTC. Many of our Resident Groups offer classes, workshops, performances and training programs in music, dance, art, theater, playwriting and more.
The winning film “Inocente” is also a victory for arts education. It’s the story of a 15-year-old girl who refuses to let her dream of becoming an artist be stifled by her life as a homeless family for nine years. Inocente was introduced to the arts through programs at ARTS: A Reason to Survive, founded by Matt D’Arrigo, which uses therapeutic arts programming, arts education and college and career pathways to success for youth facing adversity.
We’re proud to have Inocente’s Emoo cow from the Cow Parade on display at NTC in Building 201, next to Solare Ristorante. And to have hosted her first gallery show. Congratulations to Inocente, and to our friends at ARTS on this most remarkable achievement…..and to all our NTC Resident Groups who are changing lives each day at NTC. For more information about classes and workshops at all our NTC Resident Groups, especially for children, go to www.NTCLibertyStation.com For more information on ARTS: A Reason to Survive, visit their website at http://www.areasontosurvive.org/ To watch the film “Inocente” go to http://www.mtv.com/videos/inocente/1702321/playlist.jhtmlMother’s Day Gift Idea- A Rosebush Tribute in the Stockdale Garden

Historic North Chapel at NTC Hosts Memorable Events
There’s only one building in the NTC Historic District that stands out from among the rest thanks to its distinctive white color among a sea of Navy tan: the Historic North Chapel. Built in 1942, it served as a place of worship for thousands of Naval Training recruits and servicemen. When the Navy base was decommissioned in 1997 the chapel evolved into a very special event venue open to the public but with decades of memories.
Fully restored, the Spanish Colonial Revival-style chapel is known as “The Most Charming and Historic Setting in San Diego” and boasts:
- Wooden hand-carved pews, pulpit and vaulted ceiling beams
- The original Rodgers pipe organ in full working order as well as a Baby Grand Piano
- The majestic Grand Symphony Carillon Bells
- Priceless Fred Wieland stained glass windows depicting Naval as well as biblical scenes
- More than 300 seats in the principal room and 40 in the smaller chapel
- A newly added state-of-the-art sound and lighting system
- Plenty of free parking
