ON POINT - April 2009

Behind the Scenes at NTC Promenade” Civic Community Forum – April 14th, 5:00pm – 6:00pm at the NTC Command Center, 2640 Historic Decatur Road, San Diego, CA.

Recognize your loved one this Mother’s Day

Sybil Stockdale Rose Garden

Honor your loved one this Mother’s Day with a gift that recognizes unshakable love, commitment, trust and perseverance.

The NTC Foundation offers you a special opportunity to dedicate a beautiful rose bush in the Sybil Stockdale Rose Garden at NTC Promenade in the heart of the new cultural district at Liberty Station…a new destination that itself is blooming into a San Diego landmark.

A commemorative plaque with your personal message will be implanted adjacent to your designated rosebush. This is a limited opportunity with only 110 tribute rose bushes available. Your donation of $500 to the NTC Foundation will be used to help preserve the historic buildings at the former Naval Training Center and their new mission as a cultural center.

To assure your lasting tribute is placed in this special garden, please click here to purchase your rosebush and inscribe your recognition plaque. Contact Stacy Goodman at 619-573-9307 with any questions or to schedule a tour of NTC Promenade and the Sybil Stockdale Rose Garden.

NTC Promenade Cow on Display in La Jolla

Union Tribune columnist Diane Bell called “Emoo” her “favorite cow” among the 40 cows now on display through June 15 in La Jolla for the Cow Parade. We agree, and we look forward to having Emoo return to a permanent pasture among the green spaces of NTC Promenade later this spring.

Emoo was designed and painted by Inocente Izucar, a 15-year old student, who recently transferred from the Monarch School, a school providing accredited education and basic needs for homeless and at-risk kids, to High Tech High. Through the Monarch School, she was introduced to the Pat D’Arrigo ARTS (A Reason to Survive) Center at NTC Promenade. For the past few months, Inocente – with assistance from artist Dessa Kirk – has made a white plastic life-size cow come alive with her brilliant colors and designs capturing the Emo expression of alternative style of punk rock fashion and music preferred by many of today's teens.

Inocente’s cow was sponsored by Malin and Roberta Burnham, who have donated Emoo to the NTC Foundation to further enliven our growing artistic campus.

You can see Emoo in front of the Parisi Hotel on Prospect Street in La Jolla – along with the other 40 cows scattered throughout La Jolla. A map and details are at www.cowparadelajolla.com.

NTC Promenade is now in CyberSpace!

We would like to invite you to stay connected. For timely updates and the opportunity to share your ideas, please join us on the following social media Web sites: Flickr, Digg, Declicious and Slideshare.

For example, you can find a variety of photos taken of our venues and events on the photo-sharing site Flickr (www.flickr.com/photos/ntcpromenade). This has proven to be a valuable public relations and sales tool in that we don’t have to try to email huge photo files but rather point the query to this site.

Our press clipping archives have taken up home at one of the news aggregator Web sites and therefore are available for reference without fear of computer crashes. If you’d like to review some of the past stories, go over to Digg (www.digg.com/users/ntcpromenade).

What Digg is to news stories, Delicious is to Web sites. We set up a page with some of our favorite bookmarks. Check them out at www.delicious.com/NTCpromenade.

Finally, Slideshare is just what it sounds like, a place to share slide PowerPoint presentations. We decided to post some of our generic presentations that are commonly used in a “loop” format or continuously repeating. Those can be seen at www.slideshare.net/NTCpromenade/slideshows.
And there are more to come.

Each of these Web sites not only gives us a new place to put our information, but also an opportunity to hear from you. If you have any questions regarding NTC Promenade’s social media sites, please contact Cris Canning at [email protected].

In 1974, San Diego was a very different place than today. Pete Wilson was Mayor, the population was a mere 700,000, there was no Gaslamp District, no trolley and the Padres and Chargers played in place called Jack Murphy Stadium. It was in this climate that Jean Isaacs began producing professional dance for the region and she has continued non-stop for thirty five years. In honor of this artistic milestone, San Diego Dance Theater will present the Jean Isaacs 35th Anniversary Retrospective Concert at San Diego State.

Be sure to check the NTC Promenade online calendar for all the happenings scheduled.

Please consider making a gift to NTC Foundation to help us translate the community’s vision for NTC Promenade into a new Arts and Culture District that will increase the quality of life for all San Diegans.  Donate now!
