ON POINT - June 2011

Spotlight on Art and Dance at Friday Night Liberty June 3rd

High Tech High Student Work

A theater critic who paints dancers? An artist who dances in paint to make art? It’s a topsy turvy Friday Night Liberty on June 3 at NTC Promenade! Join us as renowned San Diego theater critic Pat Launer opens an exhibit of her paintings and drawings in the Mandell Weiss Gallery entitled Figuratively Speaking: Bodies in Motion and at Rest. At the pulse gallery, new works by Cuban-born artist Silfredo La O will be on exhibit, created by his dances with color on canvas in socked feet. The NTC Command Center will feature NOW: Contemplations on Contemporary Society, a thought-provoking exhibition of conceptual photographic art by High Tech High students (shown). Resident Dance Place companies Malashock Dance and Jean Isaacs San Diego Dance Theater will present FREE dance performances, along with Tango With Colette. Round out your evening with several new exhibits in the galleries with FREE receptions. A complete schedule is at www.NTCPromenade.com/what.php or 619-573-9260.

Liberty Station Wins Prestigious International Award

Liberty Station, the 360-acre new neighborhood at the former Naval Training Center, recently won a prestigious award of excellence for Best Master Plan from the International Real Estate Federation. The judges called the project a “vibrant, mixed-use, pedestrian-oriented community.” The NTC Promenade Arts & Cultural District is in the historic center of Liberty Station. The Corky McMillin Companies, the project master developer that is implementing the community’s plan for Liberty Station, was presented with the Award at the Federation’s Congress in Cypress. This honor is a tribute to the community that created the vision, the McMillin Company for successfully implementing the City’s plan and everyone who has helped make Liberty Station a neighborhood worthy of international recognition.

NTC Promenade Has Community Impact

In just under 5 years since the NTC Promenade opened to the public in 2006, the growing Arts and Cultural District is already having a significant community and regional impact ranging from new jobs, an increase in the regional economy, neighborhood revitalization and community enrichment through the arts. San Diego is embracing NTC Promenade.  Last year, over 250,000 residents, visitors and students attended receptions, festivals, performances, classes and exhibits – and more than 1,300 events took place.  People are learning, creating and enjoying themselves. Where recruits once learned radio transmission skills, dancers and musicians train and parents bring children for their first lessons.  Where sailors once slept in barracks, artists work in studios and teach art. People are learning, creating and enjoying themselves.

Young Dancers at NTC Promenade

The NTC Foundation is the not-for-profit organization overseeing the development of NTC Promenade. It oversees two key areas of programs and activities:  1) The preservation, restoration and operation of the 26 historic buildings in the NTC Promenade, the largest cultural project in San Diego County, and 2) The operation of a regional arts and cultural destination for San Diego residents and visitors, which includes collaborative marketing, events, and promotion with Resident Groups.  NTC is becoming San Diego’s “New Training Center,” but now in the area of arts, music, dance and creativity.
The NTC Foundation achievements include:

  • Extensive community outreach to create and implement a community vision for the 26 buildings
  • Finding a remarkable mix of 38 civic, arts and cultural groups, and artists, to be in residence in the first 7 buildings in Phase I
  • Securing $41 million in contributions and funding to renovate 7 buildings
  • Developing a creative, collaborative community among the 38 resident groups in Phase I so they can better serve the community and lower operating expenses
  • Nurturing new and emerging small businesses and nonprofits
  • Creating new educational and career training opportunities that benefit students and military families within a two mile radius who are among the region’s most diverse, underserved populations
  • Increasing community access to the arts to all San Diegans
  • Creating the Liberty School education program to bring at-risk students to our campus for curriculum-based arts education classes with professional artists
  • Launching Friday Night Liberty, an evening of FREE open artist studios, galleries, and performances throughout the NTC Promenade Arts and Cultural District at Liberty Station
  • Laying the groundwork for completing the next 8-building Phase 2 in mid-2011

In 2008, NTC Foundation was awarded a grant from the James Irvine Foundation to fund the Resident Group Collaborative: a marketing, outreach, education and capacity building initiative that demonstrates the Foundation’s commitment to collaboration.  In response to the group’s work, NTC Foundation created Friday Night Liberty, a free evening of open artist studios, galleries and performances the first Friday of each month.  An average of 1,000 people attend each event.

In collaboration with Resident Groups, NTC Foundation developed an innovative arts education program called Liberty School, which offers at-risk public school students learning experiences that enrich standards-based curriculum with project-based learning strategies using the rich resources of the arts and culture organizations that are tenants of NTC Promenade.

Great Meeting Locales!

NTC Command Center Meeting Room 4Looking for the perfect spot for your next meeting, conference, symposium or board retreat? How about a convenient location, free parking and a park-like setting?  Your meetings can have the comfort and ease that the admirals enjoyed.

The event venues at NTC Promenade offer the perfect place for your next meeting of five or 500.  The in-house AV, flexible seating packages and historic ambiance combine to ensure you have a wonderfully productive meeting.  And we’ll make sure everyone finds just the right room with directional signage that takes your guests from the minute they enter Liberty Station right up to the door of your meeting room.

Imagine gathering with your colleagues in the same rooms once filled by admirals and commanders.  The NTC Command Center has five such rooms, each equipped with flat-screen monitors, conference call capability and meeting supplies.

The Event Center can accommodate larger conferences and training sessions for single or multi-day sessions.  And with a 15’ x 20’ screen, even the last row will view your presentation as easily as the first.   Or think about a general session in the Event Center and break-out sessions in the Command Center.

Both facilities have prep kitchens and hospitality areas for your convenience.

Have we convinced you?  More questions?  Call one of our sales representatives at 619-573-9260 and book your next meeting at The Venues at NTC Promenade.
