Spurlock Poirier Begins Work on Master Garden Plan for Officer’s Quarters

San Diego landscape architect firm Spurlock Poirier has begun work to develop a Master Plan for the 4 acres of historic Officer’s Quarters Gardens at NTC Promenade.

Long a setting for official Navy gatherings and garden events, the Gardens behind the four Officer’s Quarters on Rosecrans have panoramic views of Downtown San Diego and the bay, and retain walkways, plantings and garden rooms that make this an invaluable addition to the adjacent NTC Promenade Arts and Culture District.

“Our goal is to restore the magnificence of these gardens and their historic features, and open them to the public for the first time,” said Alan Ziter, NTC Foundation Executive Director. “We want to enliven them with events and activities and artistic features that make them a true extension of our creative district, while offering San Diego residents and visitors a unique formal garden setting unlike any other public garden in the region.”

The Master Plan is the first step towards making this happen. After plans are developed over the next several months, donations will be needed to restore, renovate and provide an operating fund for the Gardens.

Spurlock Poirier was selected for the project by an NTC Work Group made up of historic and landscape professionals who reviewed proposals in 2006 from several different contractors to carry out the Master Plan for the Gardens. The Plan is being funded in part from a $100,000 grant to the NTC Foundation from the California Cultural and Historic Endowment to undertake a Historic Structures Report on the Officer’s Quarters (nearly complete) and to develop a Master Plan for the Officer’s Quarters Gardens.

At this time, the NTC Foundation is still seeking $40,000 to fully fund the Master Plan. To find out more about the Garden Master Plan and to make a contribution, contact Alan Ziter at [email protected]

As plans are being developed, the NTC Foundation will host a Civic Community Forum to provide an opportunity for community input.

Buy a Brick at NTC Legacy Plazas

You can honor your loved one with a lasting imprint by purchasing a Commemorative Brick for placement at NTC Promenade, in the heart of the Arts and Culture District.

For more than 75 years, nearly 2 million Navy recruits and personnel trained at the Naval Training Center in Point Loma. Today, under the auspices of the NTC Foundation, 26 National Historic Register buildings on 28 bayside acres, now called NTC Promenade, are coming alive once again as San Diego’s new flagship destination for arts, culture, science, technology and military service organizations that serve the area’s diverse communities.

Among the many new landmarks and gathering places at NTC Promenade are three Legacy Plazas. Visitors will be able to stroll down the promenade and be inspired by thousands of names on personalized NTC Commemorative Bricks placed by loved ones to honor those who served and by those who support NTC’s new mission. “I was honored to receive my Commemorative Brick and be a part of preserving the past, while building for the future,” Lew Witherspoon, Commander, US Navy (Ret) and NTC Boot Camp (RCPO) 1968.

The NTC Commemorative Bricks are displayed in the Fieldstone Legacy Plaza at NTC Promenade. The display is located just off Roosevelt between Truxton and Historic Decatur Roads between the Galinson Family Fountain and the NTC Command Center. Additional Commemorative Bricks will be added to the display on an annual basis.

Act now, and give a gift that will be treasured for generations. The NTC Commemorative Brick Program has been discontinued. If you are interested in purchasing a tribute at NTC, we still have Rosebushes available in the Sybil Stockdale Rose Garden. They may be ordered here. For additional information or to schedule a tour, please contact Stacy Goodman, Director of Development at [email protected].
