ON POINT - July 2010
Grants Advance NTC Foundation Mission
Thank you to our donors! The NTC Foundation received several significant grants in June to advance our mission, including capital grants from the California Cultural and Historical Endowment and the County of San Diego at the recommendation of Supervisor Pam Slater Price. We have also been selected as a Major Beneficiary of Las Patronas.
With seven buildings complete and open to the public, the NTC Foundation is working to renovate the next phase of the project starting in early 2011. A significant $300,000 grant from the California Cultural and Historical Endowment (CCHE) will augment other funds to renovate Officer’s Quarters D, one of the four historic homes on Rosecrans. A grant of $100,000 has been approved from the County of San Diego’s Neighborhood Reinvestment Program at the recommendation of Supervisor Pam Slater Price to support Phase II renovations.
We are honored to be selected by Las Patronas as one of their Major Beneficiaries to benefit from the proceeds of this year’s Jewell Ball on August 7 in La Jolla. Funds granted to the NTC Foundation will be used for a much-needed, high-profile sign on Rosecrans Street for the NTC Promenade Arts & Cultural District.
The NTC Foundation is also the recipient of generous Program and General Support from the following donors:
- $6,400 from Boys and Girls Foundation for Liberty School
- $5,224 from City of San Diego’s Commission for Arts and Culture to support artist performances at Friday Night Liberty
- $1,000 from Mr. and Mrs. Tom Davidson, our neighbors in Point Loma
The mission of the NTC Foundation is to enrich the lives of San Diegans by renovating 26 historic buildings at the former Naval Training Center to create, facilitate and operate a broad-based complex focused on experiencing the arts, culture and creativity that are the hallmark of the San Diego region.

About Our New Resident Groups and Artists at Barracks 19
Chi Chocolat/Banyan Catering - Studio 103
Combining a successful catering kitchen and an artisan chocolate retail business, Banyan Catering provides an elegant yet simple and freshly prepared menu. The same ethos goes for Chi Chocolat: simple, elegant and creative - no additives or preservatives and they only use fresh cream, herbs and spices to create artisan chocolates.
Mod-Est Studio/Gallery– Studio 104
Featuring the artwork (pictured here) of owner/artist Kevin Winger . “My approach is purely spontaneous and uncensored painting, exhibiting energetic palette knife work. I strive to achieve maximum saturation of color and generate heavily textured panels that push the limits of two-dimensional art. I want to create beautiful things that bring people joy.”
Karen Angelia Kohlberg – Studio 202
“My expression as an artist is based upon the human condition. Specific areas that I am focusing on are: individual and cultural identity as well as suffering and survival. The Buddhist concept of Samsara, life’s continual change, movement, and evolution as well as my own explorations into human suffering and survival has given me deeper insight and understanding of self and humanity. Emotion, strong color, contrast, and texture are evident in much of my work. The commitment to inspire, inform and transcend the experience of human suffering fuels my work.” Each sale of each painting will be matched dollar for dollar as a contribution to the Serenity Grace Foundation, focusing on youth at risk, environmental education and cultural preservation.
About Barracks 19
The NTC Foundation completed a $2.5 million renovation to Barracks 19 in June 2009, thanks to a grant from the City of San Diego’s Redevelopment Agency and the California Heritage Fund Grant Program. It is the first of several Navy barracks buildings, built in 1923, that will have a new mission as art and design studios for artists and designers seeking space to create, exhibit, promote and sell their work. Barracks 19 joins 6 other buildings at NTC Promenade that have been renovated. For leasing information about Barracks 19 or future Barracks, contact Sean Giffin at [email protected].
Is the June Bride a thing of the past?
Throughout the years June has been the most popular month for weddings. “Everyone dreamed about being a June bride, but this may no longer be the case,” says Christie Gowdy, NTC’s newest Event Sales Manager and Wedding Expert.

Years ago when our mothers and grandmothers got married, June was the big month for weddings. “That tradition has changed throughout the years,” says Gowdy. “June marked the beginning of summer. Weddings could be scheduled around vacations, school was out and it was the easiest time of the year for wedding guests to be able to make arrangements to attend the wedding.”
Today is a different story, as women now make up almost 50% of the workforce and have demanding schedules; many schools are in session year round; and specifically for San Diego, wedding dates must sometimes be scheduled and re-scheduled around deployed fiancés. “During my 15-year career in the wedding industry I have seen many trends, and it now seems that April, May, July and September are the most popular months for holding weddings,” says Gowdy.
Here at NTC Promenade, we have rich traditions, as well as great weather all year round. Ceremonies are magical in the romantic and historic North Chapel, outdoors in the intimate Stockdale Rose Garden, or under the tall palms of the new Palm Courtyard. Receptions enjoy the scenic Legacy Plaza, Luce Court or inside the elegant McMillin Companies Event Center.
Weddings are happening year round at NTC Promenade. Every bride feels special with our ideal setting, personalized service, and commitment to make your wedding day a truly memorable occasion.

Liberty School Student Chosen as the Lead in Pirates of Penzance
This month one of our Liberty School Program students was offered a scholarship by Actors Alliance to attend their summer program. Two days into the program, he was selected as the lead in their junior summer production, Pirates of Penzance.
Shelly Breneman, Executive Director of Actors Alliance, reported she could see his confidence grow as he realized the recognition that was his on being selected. What a wonderfully successful experience for a student who hasn’t always been successful and who, through the Liberty School Program, has been able to discover his talents and explore possibilities.
The Liberty School Program, now completing its third year, brings at-risk youth to an innovative learning experience that enriches standards-based curriculum with project-based learning strategies using the rich and diverse resources of arts, culture and science organizations in residence at NTC Promenade. These classes are led by NTC resident artists and offer students an opportunity to experience learning in the arts – dance, visual art, music, fitness, theater – with a focus on building self-awareness and promoting cooperative learning.
