ON POINT - August 2011

The NTC Commemorative Brick Campaign is BACK!

In celebration of Phase II, and in response to high demand, the NTC Foundation has reopened the Commemorative Brick Campaign. You can honor a loved one or show the support of your family or business for NTC's exciting new mission with a lasting imprint by purchasing a Commemorative Brick to be engraved and displayed in the Fieldstone Foundation Legacy Plaza at NTC Promenade, in the heart of Liberty Station’s Arts and Culture District.

Legacy Plaza currently includes over 1,100 names and personalized inscriptions on bricks purchased by loved ones to honor those who have served and by those who support NTC’s new mission as an Arts & Culture District. Visitors strolling down the Promenade, watching an outdoor performance, going to a class in one of the historic buildings, admiring the historic Rose Garden – all of them are inspired by the messages engraved on the bricks.

We are pleased to offer the same pricing we offered in 2004 at $150 per brick. Replicas are also available for $45. One-hundred percent (100%) of the program’s net profits will support the transformation of the historic Naval Training Center into a vibrant arts and cultural district for the region. We invite you to purchase your Commemorative Brick to honor the military service of a family member, staff, friend…or perhaps yourself…or simply to show the support of your family or business for NTC’s exciting new mission.

Order deadlines for scheduled installations:

  • Orders received between Aug. 1-Nov. 30 will be installed by December 25.
  • Orders received between Nov. 30-Jan. 31 will be installed by February 14.
  • Orders received between Jan. 31-April 15 will be installed by May 13.

Liberty School at NTC Finishes 4th Successful Year

The legacy of training at the former Naval Training Center continues, but now it is in the areas of dance, music, art and environmental stewardship. An innovative program developed by the NTC Foundation that helps bring the arts back to the classroom is the Liberty School program. Every week for the past four school years, over 150 “at-risk” students from 3rd grade on up to high school have taken classes in partnership with our arts and cultural Resident Groups, with great results.

Frequently, at-risk students struggle with traditional approaches to learning. Curriculum at Liberty School allows these students to learn about the arts and themselves using a very hands-on approach.

Students have the opportunity to explore a variety of arts ranging from watercolor to hip hop, music to karate, photography to drama. While at Liberty School students explore not just the technical aspects of how to do a dance step or how to properly mix watercolors, they also explore their own creativity and take responsibility for the relative success of their efforts.

Our School Partners

Dewey Elementary School is located on the edge of a military housing area and many of Dewey’s students are military dependants who live in military housing. The students come from families who struggle financially, as one or both parents are lower enlisted personnel, and emotionally, with loved ones deployed for long periods of time creating single parent households. The children struggle in school, because frequent moves mean new schools, new curriculum, and the need to make new friends. Dewey students attend Liberty School classes every Wednesday afternoon.

When students have been expelled from San Diego Unified School District they can be sent to ALBA (Alternative Learning for Behavior & Attitude) for a semester. Nearly 87% of the students attending ALBA qualify for free or reduced lunches placing the majority of ALBA students in that at-risk category. Seventh and eighth graders from ALBA attend Liberty School every Friday at NTC.

Juvenile Court & Community Schools are the alternative education sites San Diego County Office of Education operates serving highly mobile and at-risk students throughout the County.

Students from ALBA and JCCS face especially daunting challenges. Some are homeless, others live in group homes, many are under court supervision having disengaged intellectually and emotionally, and some have engaged in harmful activities including substance abuse.

The Liberty School Experience

Beginning Guitar Lessons at
Recreational Music Center

The first thing you notice when visiting a Liberty School class at Recreational Music Center is the sound. When the students are participating in the drum circle doing call and response patterns with large stand up African drums, the sound is very loud. The sound is very quiet when the students change activities and play the electronic drum kits, guitars, and pianos. Then they hear themselves and others in their ensemble through headphones. During both activities students enjoy hands-on experiences with instruments. The look of joy on the face of a quiet 7th grade girl as she sits in the drum circle and creates a beat pattern for her classmates to follow is an example of how Liberty School works to improve critical social skills especially cooperative teamwork, communication and listening skills.

An observer of a Liberty School class participating in a rotation with Malashock Dance will see children fully engaged with the challenges of learning choreography to express emotion. When the children portray a character in a dance they have created they move across the dance floor with confidence. A lively third grade boy creeps across the dance floor, springs up with his hands on his hips, turns and kicks, all in time with the music. He is demonstrating how Liberty School helps students improve in their ability to demonstrate self-expression, observation skills, and physical strength.

Watching a class conducted at the San Diego Watercolor Society will leave the viewer with images of students learning how to use the tools of water, brush, pigment, and paper to create artwork that expresses an idea. A working artist shares her techniques for mixing watercolor then provides high school students with red, yellow, and blue pigment for them to create 25 different hues. They learn to create a value scale and see how it is used by professionals prior to executing a final piece.

Liberty School strives to be a program that is rich and complex for all of its learners. We are proud to be able to offer a variety of learning opportunities for the students we serve. Students are able to explore artistic venues that they might not have realized exist and are able to succeed at them.

For many of our students, formal education has not worked. Liberty School is an opportunity to look at learning in a whole new way, an opportunity to be successful and enjoy the learning as part of the success. We are constantly striving for excellence. We have the flexibility of a small program to make changes quickly when they are necessary.

Thank you to our Liberty School Donors for making this program possible!

The Best Place for Your Event

The word is out on the best place in San Diego to have a meeting, special event, festival, rehearsal, class or 5K - The Venues of NTC Promenade

The Venues of NTC Promenade have long been loved by those clients who already know the secret. Such groups as San Diego Magazine, Indiefest, Arthritis Foundation, the US Navy and Coast Guard come back again and again. Many festivals have recently discovered the venues and made plans to come back again.

Thanks to these and other groups we were able to beat the odds as we grew amidst a challenging economy. Working in our favor was perhaps our non-profit status and remarkable state-of-the-art facilities. Of course, the beautiful setting and historical significance were also helpful.

Our sales team goes above and beyond to book groups into both the indoor and outdoor venues. We try to be flexible with recession-friendly pricing and, of course, offer superior customer service.

As we look ahead to 2012, we are encouraged as more individuals and organizations learn of the venues. We are forming strategic alliances with key vendors and are widening our services as well as our target markets. On any given day at NTC Promenade you can find a prom, 5K walk, seminar, craft fair, fundraiser, art show, dance rehearsal, military ball, board retreat or high-level meeting.

When will you have one of your events here? Do you have a friend or colleague who would enjoy learning about the venues? Please spread the word!

For more information about how we can help you with your event, call 619-573-9260 or visit our venues page.
