“Pathway to Completion” Campaign Seeks $6 Million to Complete 19 Buildings at NTC Promenade
The NTC Foundation has a unique opportunity to leverage $6 million in philanthropic support into the $60 million needed to complete ALL of the remaining 19 buildings on our 26-building campus over the next 5 years, including Luce Auditorium. The result will be the largest new Arts & Cultural District in San Diego dedicated to bringing arts and culture to a new level of excellence.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime moment to transform a former naval base into a regional jewel. San Diego has not had such an opportunity to create a significant cultural legacy since the founding of Balboa Park nearly 100 years ago.
The community is embracing NTC Promenade with their contributions and participation. Thanks to community support, the NTC Foundation has secured over $41 million through private donations, New Market and Historic Tax Credits, rehabilitation grants and conventional financing to complete renovations to seven Phase I buildings.
Already within the seven completed buildings, NTC Promenade is home to 25 cultural and civic groups, and a growing community of artists and designers. In 2008, over 250,000 residents, visitors and students attended receptions, festivals, performances, classes and exhibits. And, more than 1,300 events have taken place on our campus. People are learning, creating and enjoying themselves.
The benefits to our Resident Groups have been enhanced community partnerships, increased earned income, better donor engagement and new opportunities to advance their craft.
Completing the Vision
With Phase I complete and successful, the Foundation is poised to complete renovations to the remaining 19 historic buildings to create a lasting home for dozens of arts and cultural groups, and to provide performance space, galleries, classrooms and other venues that offer innovative cultural and educational experiences to our community.
The extraordinary leverage of $6 million in private gifts into $60 million in construction is attributable in major part to the Foundation’s ability to replicate its earlier success in attracting federal tax credits to the project. This brings the gift to the San Diego community of financial resources not otherwise available. And, the timing is now to capture $31 million in tax credits before they could potentially become unavailable to us after 2010.
Legacy Naming Gifts are available at a wide range of levels for all San Diegans to leave a lasting impact at NTC. We invite your consideration of a Legacy Gift to the NTC Foundation to help us reach our $6 million philanthropic goal. Contact Alan Ziter at [email protected] for a behind the scenes tour to learn more about our plans.
Lee Lipsey Honored as NTC Foundation’s STAR Award Volunteer
The NTC Foundation is pleased to nominate Lee Lipsey to be our STAR Award volunteer of the year. Lee will be honored, along with other volunteers in the San Diego arts community, at a community celebration at the Balboa Theatre on Monday, September 21.
Creating community is a hallmark of Lee’s volunteer work. Lee has spent the past year volunteering to help the NTC Foundation reach out to the widest range of San Diego’s creative industries to introduce them to the NTC Promenade Arts & Cultural District and identify opportunities for them to make the campus their home. She is a founding member of the Point Loma Concerts Committee where she co-chaired the Concerts Committee from 2002 to 2008. Lee is also the founder and publisher of the Peninsula Arts Calendar, a quarterly flyer promoting community arts and arts education. Dedication, persistence, commitment….all with elegance and a smile.

Irvine Foundation Grant Funds NTC Resident Group Collaborative
The NTC Foundation has received a $40,000 “Creative Communities” grant from the James Irvine Foundation to develop a new ‘creative collaborative’ among the 34 resident arts and cultural organizations and artists that call the new multi-tenant arts center at NTC Promenade their home.
Already, work has begun on developing the collaborative, which is intended to:
- Facilitate cost-effective collaboration and creative partnerships between the Resident Groups and the community
- Broaden, deepen, and diversify participation among those that will benefit from these collaborative partnerships
- Increase the capacity of the Resident Groups - most of which are mid-size or small budget organizations - to be more effective in their marketing and outreach, resulting in more participation, sales, new audiences and community recognition
According to NTC Foundation Executive Director Alan Ziter, “It is appropriate that as the nonprofit developer of the 26-building arts campus, the NTC Foundation lead the effort to develop a creative, collaborative community. This opportunity will help us to reach that potential.”
One of the first outcomes has been the creation of the Gallery of Resources, which catalogs all the resources our Resident Groups have that others can access.
“It really is remarkable what our Resident Groups already have in place in just the first seven buildings,” said Ziter. “Classrooms, exhibit space, kilns, print and frame making equipment, musicians and musical instruments, instructional studios, and a wealth of creative skills - an incredible roster of tools that can be shared for mutual success. Collaboration is critical to help all nonprofits and small businesses in the creative community get through challenging times."
The NTC Foundation has engaged Liz Shear to carry out the Work Plan. Liz has a wealth of experience in developing collaboratives and has been an educator, facilitator and consultant to volunteer public and private-sector organizations. Along with Barbara Broderick, she was the consultant that created and implemented our successful Liberty School program.

Does Your Event Leave a Philanthropic Footprint?
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has been a growing movement the last few years. This is a concept whereby an organization considers the long-term interests of the communities in which they operate. One obvious outgrowth of this movement has been to make functions more “green” and to lessen their negative impact on the environment. Just as important, though, is how an organization impacts the prosperity of the community in which it operates. This includes where an organization holds its meetings and events.
CSR can be demonstrated in the venue selection for an event. Your rental of venue space at the NTC Promenade will leave a philanthropic footprint that will help us to finish restoring the historic buildings entrusted to us. As we renovate the historic buildings at NTC, we are creating a non-profit center for arts and culture that will serve San Diego for generations to come.
The NTC Command Center is an executive conference center equipped with free WiFi and domestic conference calling. Each room has a 42-inch plasma monitor. Housed in what once was the base library, the Corky McMillin Companies Event Center includes in-house audiovisual equipment. Additionally, the grounds offer a beautiful setting for outdoor galas, receptions, 5Ks and festivals.
When you are shopping for the perfect location for your next function, call one of the event experts at the NTC Promenade at (619) 573-9260 or review the Venue Rentals tab at www.ntcpromenade.com.
Make sure your event leaves a philanthropic footprint.
